Description: Circa 1800 Federal Cherry Tall Case Clock made by Abel Hutchins, Concord New Hampshire. The case with arched bonnet with applied fretwork, chimneys with plinths that support 3 original brass ball & spire finials. The tombstone shaped glazed door with beautiful satinwood bell flower inlay opens to an American painted iron dial with rolling moon phases, seconds bit and calendar register. The eight day brass striking movement with arched cutout plates and beautiful engraving is closely related to the documented Hutchins movements in Parsons show on pages 82 - 83, and 92 - 93, New Hampshire Clocks & Clockmakers. The case is clearly the work of the same hands as the example documented in Randall's Catalog: American Furniture in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the example depicted in Figure 119 of Mr. Parson's book. A pair of turned columns flank the bonnet and are supported with cast brass capitals. The waist is flanked by fluted quarter columns with brass capitals, with satinwood bell flower inlay below the capitals. The rectangular waist door with cross banded mahogany veneer and inlay opens to a pair of tin can weights supported by their original pulleys. The clock retains it's original winding crank. Overall Dimensions (inches): 92 X 19 1/4 X 9 1/4.Condition: The clock is in excellent running order and has been completely serviced. The case has been cleaned but retains it's original finish. The dial, movement, and case are all original to each other. The seat board is undisturbed and the feet are original. The backboard extends down to the floor and serves the dual role as the back feet.
Restoration: The clock is an honest, original example with only minor repairs & conservation: restored fretwork and tightening of the base by William Bowers in 1972 with a letter that documents the work, and very minor touch up to the dial at the 4 dial posts by Astrid Donnellan with documentation from Astrid and photos of the dial before the touch up.
