High Style Empire Mahogany Tall Clock made by John Nicholl circa 1835.    This is a very fine and rare example of an 8 day tall clock by Nicoll.  What makes this clock so special is the case: absolutely incredible figured mahogany with inset diamond inlay, cross banding, and finest gouge carved acanthus carvings all on paw feet.   The dial is is American and from Philadelphia out of the Jones shop.  Note the American flag flying on the ship in the arch.   The pictures tell the whole story.   Please read the wonderful article on Nicholl in the Feb 2006 Maine Antique Digest written by Dr. David Sperling which includes gleanings from a series of original papers by Nicholl which were discovered with one of his extremely rare shelf clocks that document his life & work in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
