Circa 1845 - 1850 Howard & Davis Boston, #5 Weight Banjo Clock.      This is an example of the #5 square bottom banjo clock and is one of the earliest and certainly one of the scarcest Howard clocks.  The eight day brass timepiece is secured to the case with a single, rear mounted center bolt.   This clock has been in storage for many years and the case is solid Cherry, and has its original, first finish case.  No extra charge for the cobwebs and grundge !       The surface of the case is untouched, as found estate condition, with old "grundge" surface.   Of coarse you could leave it the way it is, or take some Murphy's Oil soap or hand cleaner and gently remove the dirt/grundge which will bring out the ORIGINAL graining underneat.    The pendulum bob is original and so is the Cherry pendulum rod and brass keystone.   Both reverse painted tablets are original with some old restoration that is tastefully done & some touch up to the bottom glass.    Note the original cast iron weight with the "V"  die cast in the pattern.     Other Howard period details include the use of moon hands, and push button latches.   Another interesting early Howard period detail is the use of a "paper over zinc" dial.   The dial is signed and  100 % untouched  original, and mounts with 4 screws.  There are no extra holes behind the dial.    The weight guides that secure the weight in the channel are original.      The original lower weight board is intact and the weight has never gone through the bottom of the clock.   The clock comes with it's original winding crank, and is straight from a Nazareth PA estate.    Note the repair label in the bottom box and tag on the back from the shop of the famous Philadelphia clock maker William Heine.    A related example may be found in The American Clock by Distin & Bishop # 558.   Overall Dimensions: 29" X 10" X 4 "
